'The people of Yedo(Tokyo) were suddenly awakended from a deep slumber by the call of a fleet of four American warships,commanded by Perry,at Uraga at the mouth of Tokyo Bay.The arrival of the fllet threw the country into bottomless confusion,into a turmoil of controversies-some demanding that Japan open trade with foreign countries,othrs were set on fighting the forigners.Those who supported Imperial Household fought against others who defended the shougnate government.Many political and military events ensured,bringing social disorderand unrest in their train.Finally,in 1867,the Tokugawa shougnate goverment surrendered its administrative powers to the Imperial Household,resulting in the birth of Meiji Goverment."
