【DESCRIPTION】 Title Deluxe Kaga Dyeing -Yorugi and Furoshiki Publication year 1972 Deluxe edition oop
Yorugi (literately night-clothes) is a kind of blanket, it just looks like a Kimono. Furoshiki are a type of traditional Japanese wrapping cloth that were frequently used to transport clothes, gifts, or other goods.
The preface says; 'We can see the designs as if it is alive and handmade work since long time ago. While Kaga Yuzen has been in the limelight, Kaga Dyeing has not that much. Through this book we need to recognize that it was an origin of Yuzen' *Kaga is the old way of calling Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture.
In Kanazawa, there was a way of dyeing called 'Ume-zome', literately 'Japanese plum dyeing' using cooking liquid of tree barks of Japanese plum in Muromachi period (14-16c). That dyeing was also called Kaga-zome, Kaga dyeing.
This item contains beautiful designs of Yorugi and Furoshiki by Kaga dyeing techniques. Total 14 works in color and much more photos(B&W).
In Edo period, techniques of Yuzen-dyeing came in and it is said that Kaga dyeing progressed and became Kaga-Yuzen dyeing. In Kanazawa, people call dyeing by hand Kaga-Yuzen, and one by patterns Kaga dyeing.
*Yuzen is a technique of a Kimono which gives an outline with the paste which achieves the duty of a bank so that dye may not be mixed. Its feature is the delicate white outline of a pattern which appears when washed at the process of finish.
It is said that the yuzen technique of painting dye directly onto cloth was established by Miyazaki Yuzensai, a popular fan painter living in Kyoto toward the end of the 17th century although dyeing techniques had existed since the 8th century.
The designs in this item vary. All of them are exquisite and fablous. Even if you don't understand Japanese, you will enjoy this book through many photos.
