Yoshie Ueki, who began embroidering at fifteen, is a recognized master of her craft in Japan. She has exhibited extensively in Japan and directs her own embroidery school in Suginami, Tokyo. Ueki’s embroidery, though traditional in medium, is unconventional in size and remarkable in style and detail.
Devoted exclusively to flowers, Ueki’s embroidery reflects her careful observation and love of nature. Each flower is distinctly rendered with stitches and thread that are most characteristic of the plant. Some works feature delicate, scattered blossoms embroidered with fine thread, while others depict roses in full bloom with twisted, strong and thick thread. Through focus and devotion, Ueki imbues her flowers with a mysterious intensity.
