'In the 16th century some works of Japanese art were brought out to European countries for the first time. At the opening of Japan to foreign countries in the 19c, special envoys and diplomatic representatives came over to Jpaan from European countries, who purchased Japanese art for their art collections.
Some people regret that the first-class objects of Japanese art are in foreign countries, but if only the secound-class works arts were to be desplayed in foreign museums, the foreigners would have misunderrstood our culture.
We believe that the Japanese art in the foreign museums has played a great role in fuiding the f oreigners in the understanding of our cultue and history'
