【DESCRIPTION】
TITLE Vintage Hyakunin Isshu w/many illustrations
Publication year 1891
Japanese Style Stiched Binding

This is a tasteful Hyakunin Isshu book published over 100 years ago!

Hyakunin isshu is a traditional style of compiling Japanese waka poetry where each contributor writes one poem for the anthology. Literally, it translates to "one hundred people, one poem [each]". It also refers to the card game of uta-garuta, which uses a deck composed of poems from one such anthology.

In this item you can see illustrations of poet and tasteful calligraphy.
On the first page, there are an illustration of Rokkasen-the six most well known Waka poets. They were selected poets of Waka in the early Heian period. They were:

Henjo
Ariwara no Narihira
Hun'ya no Yasuhide
Kisen
Ono no Komachi -She is also famous as a woman of great beauty.
Otomo Kuronushi

The six Waka poets derived from the anthology of poems Kokin Wakashū (905), where Ki no Tsurayuki, one of compilers, referred to them as "famous poets in the near past" in the preface. That title was given later. Similar Japanese poet groupings include the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals and the group of one hundred poets included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.

In Japan in some junior high or high schools they teach Hyakunin Issyu and students memorize those. It is easy to repeat from memory because the form of Waka poet -5/7/5/7/7 letters sounds good rythem for Japanese people.
Some people still play Hyakunin Issyu cards on the new year day.
