It is a Japanese mosquito net. In Japan we used use this Kaya in summer time when sleeping. At the time we didn't have air conditioner at home, we had to go sleep with windows open to make it cooler. Then mosquitos can come in and bother you to keep sleeping with itch.
Kaya can keep mosquitos out of your sleeping place. People used Kaya for a long time and in Edo period that was popular and necesarry stuff for daily life in summer.
Nowadays we can barely see people using Kaya because most of people have air conditioner at home. Peole on 30s,40s or above ages might remember the days in their childhood using Kaya every year. photo of kaya
