The Misho school has chiefly thrived in the western part of Japan as its main centre has always been in Osaka. Koho Hihara, who died in 1981, became the head of the school in 1920 and was responsible for creating and adopting new and modern styles. Sekiho Hihara, the present and ninth head of the school, is active in instructing KAKUBANA, a unique and traditional IKEBANA associated only with this school, and at the same time he teaches modern styles which express the feeling of the present age. Being one of the directors of the Japan IKEBANA Association, he is contributing to the promotion of IKEBANA both in Japan and overseas
Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement, also known as kado.
In contrast to the massing of blooms typical of flower arrangement in western countries, Japanese flower arrangement is based on the line of twigs and/or leaves, filled in with a small number of blooms. The container is also a key element of the composition. The structure of a Japanese flower arrangement is based on a scalene triangle delineated by three main points, usually twigs, considered in some schools to symbolize heaven, earth, and man.
