Combs, ornamental hairpins and bodkins were the most precious accessories treasured by Japanese women in the days when the coiffure of raven-black hai was the very life of thier toilette. The aesthetic sense, as well as the joys and sorrows of individual women, emanetes from the delicate details of craftsmanship, elegantly refined or strikingly chic designs, and the rich harmony of color arrangements'...
Ornamental hairpins (Kanzashi in Japanse) were used in traditional Japanese hairstyles. Kanzashi first appeared when women abandoned the traditional taregami hairstyle where the hair was kept straight and long, and adopted coiffured nihongami hairstyles. Kanzashi came into wide use during the Edo period (16c-19c) when artisans began to produce more finely crafted products.
Kanzashi are fabricated from a wide range of materials such as lacquered wood, gold and silver plated metal, tortoiseshell and silk.
In this book, you can also see combs made of lacquered wood and bamboo.
